]]> The doctor will begin by asking the patient many questions about pain, numbness, tingling, weakness, and other symptoms in diagnosing pinched nerve.

Patients may also be asked about other medical conditions, work history, and family medical history. This information can often help in identifying the nerves are affected.
Then the doctor will examine the body part involved. This may include tests of strength, sensation, and muscle of patients on specific muscles. Depending on the results of medical history and physical test, the patient may need additional tests.

When diagnosing pinched nerve of patient, if a doctor suspects patient to have pinched nerve in neck or lower back (compression of the nerves), X-rays may be necessary to assess the likelihood of injury to the spine or arthritis of the spine. Depending on the severity and duration of patient’s symptoms, he may also need a CT scan or MRI scan. These imaging studies provide additional information about the pinched nerve that is not seen on regular X-rays, and can provide additional information in preparation for surgical intervention if necessary.

The doctor may also recommend specific tests for nerve conduction studies are affected including nerve or electromyography (EMG). In nerve conduction studies, tests stimulate the nerves with a mild electrical impulses and measure the speed of nerve impulses that are running in. In EMG, a small needle is placed into the muscle while the patient contracts the muscles to measure electrical activity of muscles.
